Coming in at a penny under £1,000, the 55m-deep Token TK-C55s looked like they could be a bit of a bargain. You get a set of full carbon clinchers that weigh less than 1,500g, complete with bladed Sapim spokes and Token’s own TgX braking surface.

The TgX is designed to dissipate heat faster and therefore provide better braking performance, and although performance was acceptable, we found it better when we switched from the supplied pads to Reynolds’s Cryo Blue Power pads.

As you’d expect from a set of wheels that costs less than half that of some of their rivals, the rim profile is a more traditional v-shape, rather than the bulging, blunted teardrop shapes found on some of the more advanced and expensive wheels.

Having said that, they rode well, showed solid stiffness, and we found them to have a noticeable aero effect over standard alu clinchers, so they’d definitely be able to take your ride up a notch for a comparatively small spend.

Verdict: Pleasantly surprising set of very well-priced wheels, 79%
