Bontrager RXL Hilo

The Hilo is aimed at the 112-mile Ironman bike leg, designed to be super light, comfortable and fast in transitions. Out of the box they visually fit the part with flashy silver, asymmetric design and custom-fit eSoles insoles.

Slipping them on with the well-designed heel tab, the Hilo proved comfortable to wear sockless and felt snug on the foot. With both straps undone they slipped on quickly and easily. Although, like most of the shoes on test here, the Hilo are harder to put on if you already have the front strap fixed. A problem with the main strap was that it sometimes pulled out of its buckle.

The eSole insoles – developed specifically for Bontrager – are a nice touch for personalisation and are mounted on a stiff carbon sole unit for an efficient Ironman effort. In all, the Hilo is a great shoe that’ll serve you well – and not just for long-distance racing.
