Tacx Satori Smart turbo trainer review

The Satori was one of Tacx’s turbo trainers that received a ‘Smart’ upgrade from Santa at the end of 2014.

In its 2015 guise it comes with sensors in the roller that track and transmit your ride data to an accompanying smartphone/tablet app (available for Apple and Android devices).

The turbo itself is ok. It has a magnetic resistance unit with 10 settings and is stable, secure and almost silent (registering just 13 decibels during warm-ups).

It can get loud though and will reach washing machine spin-cycle noise levels, with the vibrations to match (it’s not the smoothest of devices).

The app, however, is wayward. Speed and distance appear to be accurate, but your power and rpm readings are actually estimates taken from the roller.

So you’re left wondering how precise, and therefore useful, they can actually be – especially as data’s still registering long after you’ve dismounted. Santa’s gift might not be much of an upgrade after all.
