Powertap P2 power pedals

The Powertap P1 launched back in 2015, and were arguably the first faff-free power pedals, being accurate to a claimed /1.5% and with just an 8mm hex key needed to pop them on your cranks. While most athletes would be happy with the originals, those who dabble in twisty road races or cyclocross highlighted the sizeable battery unit potentially compromising ground clearance. This doesn’t appear to have been addressed in the P2, although Powertap do say they’re lighter than the P1 by 34g, coming in at 398g a pair.

The only other changes are a battery life increase from 60 to 80hrs and they’re now silver instead of black. You simply affix to your cranks, pair with the Powertap app to set up and then link to your GPS of choice to set crank length, calibrate and see the data in real-time. On our test rides the numbers were what we’d expect to see, and we’d no dropouts with fresh batteries. The battery cover is watertight, and we received accurate data in real-time during an epic downpour. We’d use the Powertap P2 pedals for training or tri race day, and they’re durable enough to use year-round.

Verdict: Still chunkier than the competition, but we can’t fault their accuracy 86%
