Are ketone drinks worth it?

James Witts explains what ketones are and why harnessing them in drinks could help performance

One of the most talked about supplements is ketones. Ketones are produced by the liver from fats and serve as an energy source, but predominantly when the body’s in a state of starvation.

Professor Kieran Clarke, of Oxford University, observed that creating a ketone drink taps into this ‘fasted’ energy when not starved, potentially conserving precious glycogen supplies for intense race efforts.

The evidence is equivocal but it’s reported that at least seven teams used ketones at this year’s Tour de France. Price has been prohibitive yet HVMN, the market-leader, now sell shots at $33. Still not cheap but hopefully that’ll drop as the competition grows.
