Kona 2019: athletes post their reaction on social media

The athletes post their post-race thoughts of Kona 2019 on social media

GB's Lucy Charles-Barclay gave it her all but victory wasn't to be hers and she finished second for the third year running

Kona you beautiful beast you...🌺πŸ₯ˆ Today I fought like I've never fought before, I rolled the dice & took a chance!🎲 There were times when I thought I could actually win this thing and then there were times when I thought I wouldn't finish at all & that is Kona! My little sprint in last 2km to pull back into 2nd has made me unable to walk but it was so worth it!πŸ˜… Biggest congrats to @tri.anne.haug on the win, not only is she a phenomenal runner but she's a genuinely lovely person too! Also congrats to @sarah_stan_crowley on 3rd you are one hell of a fighter!❀️ Photo credits: @jamesmitchell5 πŸ“Έ #kona2019 #IMWC #mahalo #livetoinspire #dreambig #workhard #nevergiveup #anythingispossible #trichicks #givesyouwings #OneObsession #aeroiseverything #AllTribesOneClan #findfaster #TeamCharlesBarclay

A great fight for second took place between Lucy Charles-Barclay and Sarah Crowley, but in the end Sarah had to settle for third...

Daniela Ryf had a rare off-day thanks to a stomach bug, but she will be back next year chasing her fifth Kona title - bring it on!

Kona never disappoints. A very tough day for me after feeling flat and nauseous due to a stomach bug which I caught a few days ago. Giving up was never going to be an option, so I dug deep and gave it everything I had. I’m OK just disappointed I couldn’t show the form I was in today. But I guess every long distance athlete has to experience one of these humbling races, where the day feels very long. The pain was real, but the support on race course was even more real. I definitely felt the motto „Ohana“ of the triathlon family out there. Thanks so much for the cheering and supportπŸ€™πŸΌ and very well done @tri.anne.haug , @lucycharles93 & @sarah_stan_crowley for the podiumπŸ‘πŸΌ. I heard the fight and bravery of the whole podium was very inspiringπŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ€© And well done to @janfrodeno. So happy for you. It wasn't to be Ali Brownlee's year but he'll be back he says....

What a race. My day couldn’t have gone much better until I punctured at Hawi. By half way though the run I had nothing left and it took everything I’ve got to put one front in front of the other. Not finishing wasn’t an option. Congrats on amazing performance @janfrodeno @tointri and @sebastiankienle Special mention to @lsanderstri for getting me home on the run. Motivated to come back better. #triathlon #ironman #kona #swim #bike #run #hawaii

Joe Skipper finished 6th and best of the Brits in the men's race - can he do better in 2020?

Kona ticked off for a other year. Pleased to move up a step from last year and finish 6th but I definitely want more and am really motivated to come back next year and push on for a podium finish. Thanks to everyone out there that was cheering me on, kona is such a tough day out and all the support made a big difference. When I got off the bike I actually wondered how I was going to even be able to finish and contemplated stopping, I felt pretty wasted but just told myself everyone else probably feels just as bad. I think one of the keys to doing well in kona is me talking strength. You have to be prepared to dig deep, suffer and force yourself to keep moving forward. Just make sure you slow down less than the rest! πŸ“· @jamesmitchell5 #ironman #iracezone3 #ironmanworldchamps #kona #triathlon
