GB track cyclist Victoria Pendleton among 1,000 women attending yesterday's festival of women’s tri at Eton Dorney Rowing Lake, with Emma Pallant winning the elite race

Over 1,000 female triathletes descended on Eton Dorney yesterday (Sunday 13 July) for a festival of women’s triathlon, with Britain’s most successful Olympic athlete Victoria Pendleton among those getting involved.

Pendleton led her team to victory in the relay race despite starting out the run leg 23secs behind rival Mel C of the Spice Girls, summoning her competitive streak to overhaul the pop star and finish in 20:52mins, over a minute ahead of her rival.

Other distances held yesterday included Novice (200m swim/5.3km bike/2.5km run), SuperSprint (400m/21.2km5km) and Challenge (800m/31.8km/7.5km), as well as a relay over the latter distance.

In the elite race, conducted over sprint distance (750m/21.2km/5km), Emma Pallant came out of the water with a 32secs deficit over leader Hannah Kitchen but made up lots of ground despite a very strong bike from India Lee to eventually win a three-way tussle between the three athletes, crossing the line in 1:04:34.
