Hey David, lots of variables there and the definition of competent is pretty subjective. On the plus side you sound pretty fit AND are taking lessons. If you take lessons and swim at least once (preferably twice) a week between now and October you'll be just fine.

If the race in October is in open water make sure you also get some open water training. This is massively different to swimming in a pool - waves, wind, current, swell. temperature etc...

I'd just write off what you've missed and carry on your training block as if you'd done what you need to do. three weeks is quite a bit and you certainly dont want to try to pack it all into a short window!

Provided you dont miss anything major that you;d planned in those three weeks you;re probably in better shape than you realise?

Get yourself booked into a chiropractor as soon as you can, you're in pain because somethings not quite right.

Also what kind of intensity are you running at? Low intensity, aerobic running shouldnt result in Achilles injuries

Every morning I have a hot water with half a squeezed lemon and a thumb of grated ginger. Seems to work for mouth hygiene and colds.

I'd also consider speaking to your GP?

It's a good question and it depends on two things:

1. What type of tri are you doing ie Sprint in a pool or HIM in open water

2. Personal preference

Typical layout for me (back to front of towel) would be:

Talced running shoes with a sock in each, hat

Talced bike shoes with a sock in each,  glasses, gloves, helmet

I was thinking about doing a post with pics etc if that would be useful?

I've got a checklist here: http://triathlondaddy.com/race-day-kit-lis/

I've got

Pump - http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bike-maintenance/bike-pumps/topeak-road-pocket-bike-pump

(Quite good for the size, fits securely under bottle bracket)

Bag - http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bike-accessories/bike-bags/topeak-aero-wedge-bag-with-strap

(Really cheap, does the job)

In a word yes!

There's no reason why you cant do couch to IronMan if you have the right advice and training plan.

The problem I think you're highlighting is a lot of people think they can just smash out a 5k or 10k without any thought to form, recovery, nutrition, intensity etc...You see it in the gym with dudes (genrally) lifting way above what they can cope with. Next thing you know, you're injured.

The articles I've read in 220 seem to present a balanced, considered view so I've no problem with it.
