Its a great challenge and believe me if you get your head down you can really get a lot of time knocked off your results!
I have got roll down places in the last two Europeans at Olympic distance - I scraped in at Worthing with a 2.31 which has a tough sea swim and a longer bike. I managed an automatic qually for the sprint this year at Southport for the Euros next year.
I would say this year would be a good option for trying to qualify for the Olympic distance Euros 2018 as they are in Estonia whereas the Sprint distance Euros are in Glasgow. There are only a few people currently on the list in my age group 35-39.

Get some lessons / training and some stamina.
If youre struggling with swimming more than 4 lengths, I'd say you werent a good swimmer and need some practice!

Absolutely agree. We were watching this on the TV and saw Learmonth spot the timing board and make a neck slicing action and then she slowed to a crawl. I said, shes going back for Non, what a bad move! The commentators didnt see this. They are always poor.
She shouldve been given the opportunity to race in her home town!

I can vouch for wearing disposable contacts for the whole race. 3 years and no problems.

Make sure your wetsuit fits, try it in open water, BUT warm up first - dont panic in the water.
Practice your transition changes as much as you can.
Make sure you have plenty time to set up on race day and dont freak out at all the impressive expensive bikes in transition - we're all nervous.
Talc, towel, wetsuit lube, race belt, elastic laces - all useful!

There is this http://www.ismseat.com/saddle/pn-11
Its 110mm rather than 135mm.
I did quite abit of investigating before I bought this. I have narrow hips for a female and have not had a problem with this since purchase last Summer.

Late reply, I have a Giro Air Attack Shield. Going up hill in Lanzarote, I upturned the visor to get more air round my face then turned it back round going downhill. Good value Aero helmet. And if you lose your shield they are easily replaced by online stockists.

I think you're very brave (or mad) by the way! Took me a couple of yrs to build up to Olympic distance. x

Pain can vary. I feel more pain running now with the effort that I can put in that when I first started.
If you're sweating alot, dont just drink water - get some salts in there.
My hubby tells me he cant believe I can walk properly the day after a hard training session or race - I put it down to replacing electrolytes & protein, eating within 20 mins and not sitting down or stopping immediately - keep walking and then do your stretches - ask your trainer to show you how to do them properly if you're not sure.
