Garmin VIRB Elite
A genuine competitor to the all-conquering GoPro
The action camera market is pretty well stocked, so Garmin have made a bold move by venturing into previously untested territory. The main feature of the VIRB is its ability to film up to 1080p at 30fps (frames per second), but another nice touch is the option to film super-slow-mo at 120fps.
The inbuilt 1.4in Choma display is great as a viewfinder and makes it easy to adjust settings compared to other cameras that opt for a screenless design. Claimed battery life is up to 3hrs when filming, but the battery is replaceable, so you can always buy another and change on the go should the need arise.
The ability to control the VIRB via ANT+ from your Edge 510/810 bike computer is a smart innovation, while the picture quality and stabilisation feature are great, the latter taking any ‘buzziness’ out of the videos. On the fly, we found 960p at 60fps gave the best overall picture quality, with the faster frame rate providing a smoother image.
