The third incarnation of the PureGrit shoe from Brooks is certainly eye-catching, with even our two-year-old commenting on how red they are. They didn’t stay that way for long, mind, after we submerged them in some of Somerset’s finest August mud.

Yet they came out fighting, with the studded lug-patterned outsole (which wouldn’t look out of place at our five-a-side) and toe bumper giving us plenty of confidence and protection on some slippery descents and stoney ascents.

Given the heavy-duty outsole, the 280g weight is fairly light, but not at the expense of comfort, which is aided by Brooks adding a traditional tongue instead of the ‘burrito wrap’ that featured on the PureGrit 2.

Importantly, they also adapted well to running on lighter trails and tarmac, offering a versatile option for neutral athletes running in a myriad of conditions. For us, a far superior option to Brooks’ Cascadias reviewed last issue.
