Epson Runsense SF-710S review

In our recent heart rate monitors grouptest, we tested the Epson Pulsense PS-500B and were impressed, its optical heart-rate sensor being the highlight.

The Runsense SF-710S is a more conventional GPS sports monitor with heart-rate facility, but only if you pay £49 extra for the chest strap (unfortunately we weren’t supplied with the latter so can’t verify the accuracy of bpm data).

You scroll between features via four buttons, which are a little too stiff for using seamlessly on the fly. Thankfully you can switch on a tap function to scroll that way. A nice touch. You can set performance parameters like intervals, target pace and distance, with the latter two reliant on the GPS – and that facility is a mixed bag.

When you’ve picked up a signal, retention is good. Unfortunately, locating that roaming satellite is a task, especially in built-up areas. When it does connect though, GPS battery life is an impressive 30 hours.

You can Bluetooth your data to iOS and Android and analyse it on the Runsense app. Bizarrely, though, if you want to do the same to your computer, it’s only Windows-compatible.

Verdict: Some nice touches, but iffy GPS pick-up and not Mac compatible, 72%
