Pro-Lite Bortola A21W bike wheels review

Pro-Lite’s Bortola wheels are difficult to classify because there are no particular areas where they feel out of their depth.

>>> Best race wheels review 2015

With the possible exception of all-out, high-speed racing – where their lack of depth puts them at a disadvantage – there are no areas in which they underperform.

They’re shallow, so crosswinds aren’t an issue. They’re pretty light, weighing in at 1,625g for the pair (726g front/899g rear, with QRs but no cassette or tyres), so they climb well.

And they have a slightly wider than usual 23.2mm rim bed, so they can happily take beefier rubber of 25mm or bigger to provide a slightly more comfortable ride.

They also have Japanese EZO bearings, which despite being stainless steel instead of ceramic, spin swiftly, smoothly and almost silently.

They’re also tubeless-ready if you feel like ditching your inner tubes. There’s no noticeable flex when you’re in or out of the saddle, and no complaints overall.

Verdict: A great pair of all-rounders that’s hard to classify, 91%
