Minoura’s VFS G is close in price to the company’s V270 but a better-looking all-round operator once it’s set up.

It’s a similar design to the Elite Crono Mag, and it’s crucial you assemble the tail section carefully as any looseness means serious wobble at high speeds. A block under the front wheel is vital to stop it lifting when you’re out of the saddle.

The winder axle clamp gives a solid grip and the vibration-free feel isn’t far off the best soft-roller designs. The combined fluid and magnetic resistance motors mean the seven levels take you from piddling along to puking your guts out.

It’s progressive manner takes a few revs to build between each click. A smaller flywheel than the other Minoura means less slip when you’re grovelling big gears. Unless you need the extra grunt, it’s quite expensive.
