It’s a hugely reassuring experience to witness a hard-case bike box, like this one from B&W, fall off a moving luggage lorry and to then find your bike perfectly intact inside.
Less encouraging, however, is the way earlier versions of this very box seemed prone to splitting at the hinges. You could solve this with parcel tape or a few holes and some zip ties, but B&W have added a belt – cheaper than stronger hinges, presumably.
It doesn’t open flat, so you can only really pack one side – putting too much weight in both sides is what probably leads to the hinges giving way.
Foam linings, retaining straps and wheel bags help keep your bike well protected but the trapezoid shape means you have to remove your bars. And if you have a one-piece seat mast, check this box is tall enough to take it before you part with your cash.
