Never go swimming alone in open water, even if you're the best.
Everything can happen to anyone.
Besides, company makes it more fun[;)]
ITC rules( well, at least WE think so!).

Yep unfortunately I had to I was in training for a channel swim this year so early morning and after work swims were a necessity, all in the sea.

I am a very confidant swimmer but saying that accidents and cramp can happen. But like cycling in traffic you take your chances or calculated risks.

Not sure about that stats, but a good number of people drown in swimming pools each year and that's with so-called life gaurds in attendance - interested to know how many 'competent' triathletes have drowned over the years in swimming accidents - many more are likely to have been killed on bikes or when running (i must admit to being really bad when looking around me before running across a junction). I usually feel safer in the water, but I do always swim with a spotter or on an organised OW session.
